An Epidemiological Survey on Whooping Cough in the Rural Area

Abstract
An epidemiological survey was carried out towards 552 cases of whooping cough in Hong Seong Kun, Chung Nam Province during the period from 25th, September to 30th, Oct. 1964.
As the result of this study, following conclusions were obtained.
(1) In the cases under 16 years of age, the average attack rate showed 70.32 and the highest attack rate in the 2-3 years of age with 161.71.
(2) No significant difference was observed between both sexes throughout the age under 16 years old.
(3) The cases among 0-5 years of age occupied more than three quarters of the total and the elder age the less patients.
(4) The highest pervalence was shown in the group of 2-3 years of age in both male and female with 18.75% and 16.67% respectively.
(5) Complete vaccination showed 0.72% infection of pertussis, both complete and incomplete vaccination, 12.32% infection.
(6) Among the siblings, seniors were infected prior to juniors with the ratio of more than 6:1
(7) The average secondary attack rate was 23.43% and the highest was shown among 1-5 years of age with 57.43%
(8) The case fatality rate under 1 year of age was 3.33%
(9) The average period from the catarrhal to convalescent stage was about 64.6 days.
(10) Out of total cases, 37.14% were diagnosed at the clinic.
(11) The average cost of medical treatment was about 305 Won, and the average number of time for treatment at clinic was 2.85.
(12) The average period from the occurance of coughing to the visiting to a clinic was about 8.4 days.
(13) The severe complications such as otitis media and convulsion of the total patients showed 5.07%.
(14) The incidence of whooping cough was observed from January to October; the highest in March, the next in April and the lowest in October, September and January.
